Lot description:

LYDIA. Thyatira. Nero with Agrippina II (54-68). Ae.

Obv: NЄPΩN KΛAVΔIOC KAICAP CЄBACTOC.
Bare head of Nero right.
Rev: ΑΓΡΙΠΠΙΝΑΝ / CЄΒΑCΤΗΝ ΘVΑΤΙΡΗΝΟΙ.
Draped bust of Agrippina right.

RPC I - (though cf. to 2380 for a similar type with Claudius on the obv.); RPC I Supp. -; Asia Minor Coins online -; apparently unpublished.

Clearly conveying a more youthful portrait and an obverse legend which begins 'NЄPΩN' rather than 'TI,' this example appears to be an unpublished type paralleling the issue of Claudius and Agrippina II (RPC I 2380), likely issue shortly after Nero's accession. It is also similar to a parallel issue with a more adult Nero, laureate, with Poppaea on the reverse (RPC I 2383). Extremely rare and highly interesting.

Condition: Very fine.

Weight: 4.19 g.
Diameter: 18 mm.

Estimate: 50 EUR
